The RIMS community deeply mourns the passing of Professor Giancarlo Comi (1945–2024), a visionary neurologist and pioneer in multiple sclerosis (MS) research. As President of the European Charcot Foundation and founder of the Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Institute at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, Professor Comi dedicated his life to unraveling the complexities of MS.
A steadfast proponent of early intervention, Professor Comi’s influential clinical trials reshaped global treatment strategies. Beyond pharmacological advances, he illuminated how rehabilitation could harness neuroplasticity, fundamentally improving quality of life for people with MS. His commitment to holistic care empowered patients to actively engage in research and decision-making, notably through his enthusiastic support of the PROMS initiative.
Professor Comi’s tireless efforts have left an indelible mark on neurology, rehabilitation science, and patient advocacy. We honor his extraordinary legacy, which continues to inspire progress in MS care and research worldwide.
